Ear Muff (ABS)

These are rated SNR 28dB. Single Number Rating is the average reduction the muffs provide, and 28dB is a substantial figure — enough to bring an angle grinder, a demolition hammer, a circular saw or a compressor room down from a level that damages hearing to one that does not. The rule of thumb worth knowing is that if you have to raise your voice to be understood by someone an arm's length away, the noise is loud enough to be doing harm.

The shell is impact-resistant ABS with a soft foam pad. The pad is not a comfort feature alone — the seal against the side of the head is what actually delivers the attenuation, and a hard or perished pad leaks. That is also why muffs perform worse over thick spectacle arms or a hard hat strap: anything breaking the seal costs you most of the protection.

They fold for carrying and storage, which sounds trivial and is the difference between defenders that live in the toolbox and defenders that live in the vehicle and never get worn.

The honest comparison with disposable foam plugs: plugs can attenuate as well or better, but only if they are inserted properly and most people do not insert them properly. Muffs are far more forgiving — put them on and they work. They are also easier to take on and off repeatedly, which suits intermittent noise, where plugs tend to be left out.
