Insulated Long Nose Plier (6")

The long tapered jaws are what you want inside a consumer unit, a junction box or a control panel, where terminals are close together and everything around them is live or could be. They pick up a dropped screw from the bottom of an enclosure, hold a small component while you tighten it, and pull a conductor through a gland. Most usefully, they form the neat hook on a stripped conductor end that goes round a terminal screw — a job that is fiddly by hand and quick with the right nose.

The 6" size is chosen for control rather than force. A shorter tool is steadier at the tip, which is the whole point of a fine-nose plier, and it fits in a shirt pocket or a small pouch.

The insulation is the part worth understanding. VDE/GS certification to EN60900 means these are made and individually tested for live working at up to 1000V AC — not simply fitted with plastic grips. Every tool is proof-tested at a much higher voltage than its rating before it leaves the factory.

The two-colour handle is a safety feature, not decoration. The insulation is built in two layers of contrasting colour, so if the outer layer is cut, worn or melted through, the inner colour shows. That is the tool telling you to take it out of service. Anyone using insulated tools should know this, and many people do not.

And the thing that matters most: insulated tools are protection against a mistake, not a licence to work live. Isolate the circuit, lock it off and prove it dead with a tester. The insulation is there for the circuit you thought was dead and wasn't.

The steel is fine chrome vanadium, hardened and tempered, with a black finish.
