The adjustable jaw is what makes it useful. A slip joint lets the jaws open wide and lock at a chosen setting, so one 10" tool grips everything from a small locknut to a conduit body or a large gland. On an installation that means tightening conduit couplings and locknuts, gripping steel conduit while you thread a fitting on, holding a cable gland while you tighten the backnut, and dealing with the trunking and tray hardware that no plier with fixed jaws will span.

The long handles give substantial grip force, which is what those jobs need. Ten inches is the practical size — big enough to tighten a gland properly, small enough to carry.

What makes this version specifically an electrical tool is that it is VDE/GS certified to EN60900 and individually tested for live working up to 1000V AC. Ordinary water pump pliers with plastic-dipped grips look similar and are not tested at all. In a plant room, a switch room or beside an energised panel, the difference is the one that matters.

The handles are moulded in two contrasting colours as a wear indicator: if damage to the outer layer lets the inner colour show, the tool is out of service. On a plier used for mechanical work this check matters more than most, because these get knocked about far more than a fine-nose plier does.

One caution particular to this tool. The serrated jaws will mark and can crush what they grip — a chrome fitting, a thin-wall conduit or a plated gland will show it. Grip firmly rather than as hard as you can, and use the largest jaw setting that fits so the load is spread.

And the standing rule for all insulated tools: isolate, lock off, prove dead. The insulation is protection against a mistake, not a way of working.
