This is the woodworking end of the range: bevel-edge wood chisels in the common widths, available singly or as a four-piece set, together with wood planers and shorter block planers for smoothing and trimming timber.

Chisels do the work that a saw cannot. Cutting a hinge recess into a door edge, squaring out a mortise, paring a joint until it seats, cleaning up a sawn shoulder, easing a door that binds in a humid month — all of it is chisel work, and none of it is possible with a blade that will not hold an edge. The widths matter: a narrow chisel gets into a tight mortise, a wide one pares a broad surface flat in fewer passes and leaves fewer ridges. A four-piece set covering the common widths handles most joinery without gaps.

Planes take material off a surface rather than out of it. A longer wood planer rides across the high spots and leaves a genuinely flat face, which is what you want when jointing an edge or flattening a board. A block planer is short, fits in one hand, and is for trimming an edge, easing a door, chamfering a corner or cleaning up end grain — the quick jobs where fetching a long plane would be more trouble than the cut.

Two habits make these tools last. Keep them sharp — a blunt chisel needs force, and force is what makes it slip and take a chunk out of the work or your hand. And never use a wood chisel on metal, masonry or nails; that is what cold chisels are for, and one strike on a hidden nail will put a notch in an edge that takes a long session on a stone to remove.
