A 135mm plane with a 33mm blade is a one-handed tool. It is small enough to hold in the palm and control with your fingertips, which is exactly what you want for trimming rather than dimensioning — easing a door edge that binds, taking the sharpness off an arris, cleaning a small glue line, fitting a drawer that is a shaving too tight.
The body is steel, and on a plane that is the specification that matters most. A plane works by holding its sole flat against the timber so the blade can only take a shaving of the depth you set; if the sole flexes or is not flat, the tool chatters and digs. A steel body gives the rigidity and the mass to resist that, and mass is also what carries the plane through a cut smoothly instead of stalling at every hard grain.
The blade is high carbon steel. For a plane iron that is a deliberate and good choice: high carbon takes a keener edge than most alloy steels and, more usefully for anyone who actually uses the tool, it sharpens back quickly on a stone. A plane iron gets sharpened far more often than a chisel does, and an iron that takes ten minutes to bring back is an iron that stays blunt.
The handle is PP plastic, which will not split, swell or work loose the way a timber handle eventually does in humid conditions.
The important thing with any plane is setting it. Wind the blade back until it takes nothing, then advance it a fraction at a time until it lifts a fine continuous shaving across its width, and adjust the lateral position until the shaving is even from edge to edge. A plane set too deep does not work faster — it digs, tears the grain and stalls. A plane taking a fine shaving does more work in less time and leaves a surface that needs no sanding.
At this size the buyers are carpenters and joiners wanting a trimming plane to keep in the bag rather than on the bench, shopfitters and furniture makers for fine fitting work, and maintenance carpenters, for whom a sticking door is a constant call-out. It is also the plane a lot of people buy first, because it is small, controllable and cheap enough to learn on.
For edge jointing, straightening a long board or flattening a wide surface, the longer 235mm plane is the tool — a short sole follows the hollows in a board instead of removing them. Ask on WhatsApp if you want both priced, and we will deliver island-wide.
