Block Planer (250)

A short plane follows the surface it is running on. Push it along a wavy edge and it drops into every hollow, cuts there as well as on the high spots, and hands you back the same wavy edge with less wood in it. A 250mm sole bridges those hollows, so the iron only meets the high points until the whole edge is level. That makes this the one to reach for when you are straightening the edge of a board for a glued joint, easing a door that binds along its full height, or truing up a length of timber — jobs the 140mm simply cannot do accurately.

The body is ABS, so it stays light for its length and is inexpensive. Being straight about the trade-off: it does not have the mass or the rigidity of a steel-bodied plane, so on dense hardwood or a long heavy cut it will feel less settled and can chatter where a steel plane would not. If most of your work is dimensioning hardwood, the 235mm steel plane is the better buy. If you want a long plane for site work, fitting and general softwood carpentry that you can carry all day, this is the sensible one.

The blade is 65Mn manganese spring steel — hard enough to hold a working edge, and quick to bring back on a stone, which matters because plane irons get sharpened far more often than most edge tools.

Setting it is most of the skill. Retract the iron until it takes nothing, advance it in small increments until it lifts a fine continuous shaving, then adjust it sideways until the shaving is the same thickness at both edges. A plane set fine cuts faster and leaves a surface that needs no sanding; a plane set deep tears the grain and stalls. Plane with the grain, and if it starts tearing, reverse the board rather than pushing harder.

Carpenters, joiners and door hangers are the main buyers, along with shopfitters and anyone doing on-site fitting where a long edge has to be made true. Building maintenance teams use them on doors and frames that have swollen or dropped.
