19mm sits between the two chisels people buy first, and it earns its place by handling the work that is too wide for a 13mm and too fine for a 25mm.
That means wider mortices — the ones for a substantial door rail or a workbench leg rather than a cabinet joint. It means paring the cheek of a large tenon in one pass instead of two overlapping ones, which is the difference between a flat surface and a stepped one. It means cleaning out a housing for a 19mm shelf, which is a common enough thickness that this chisel matches it exactly. And when you are wasting material rather than finishing it, a wider blade simply moves more timber per cut with less risk of the chisel wandering off line.
The blade is chrome vanadium, which for a chisel is the sensible middle ground: hard enough to keep an edge through hardwood, tough enough not to lose a corner when the timber turns out to contain a knot or a forgotten nail. It sharpens back quickly on a stone rather than glazing.
Full-surface machine grinding matters more as the blade gets wider, and this is worth knowing before you buy any chisel. A chisel pares accurately by registering its flat back against the work; the wider that back, the more obvious any hollow or twist in it becomes. On a 6mm blade a slightly untrue back is barely noticeable, on a 19mm it will leave a visible curve on every surface you pare. Grinding the full face flat at the factory is what makes a wide chisel usable straight away.
The orange and black Harden handle is easy to spot in shavings, which matters more than it sounds — a chisel on the floor is a chisel about to be stood on.
Use it with a mallet for chopping and by hand for paring, and keep the mallet blows to the handle rather than levering with the blade. Levering is what snaps a chisel, and the wider the blade the more tempting it is to use as a pry bar.
The regular buyers are joiners, carpenters and furniture makers doing framed and mortice-and-tenon work, along with shopfitters and stair builders. Maintenance carpenters carry one for heavier door work — lock recesses, weather bars, resetting frames.
We stock this alongside the 13, 25 and 32mm and the 4-piece set that covers 6 to 25mm. Ask on WhatsApp for the set price, delivered anywhere in Sri Lanka.
