Four chisels — 6, 13, 19 and 25mm — is the set almost every joiner ends up owning, because those four widths cover the work between them and a fifth would sit in the roll unused.
The 6mm is the fine one: cleaning the corners of a dovetail, cutting a small hinge recess on a light door or a box lid, working into a tight housing where anything wider will not fit. The 13mm is the chisel you will reach for most days — it is the standard width for a butt hinge on an interior door and for general paring. The 19mm handles wider mortices and takes larger cuts when you are wasting material rather than finishing it. The 25mm is for the broad work: a door lock recess, cleaning up the cheek of a tenon, paring a wide surface flat where a narrow blade would leave steps.
All four blades are chrome vanadium. For an edge tool, that alloy is the compromise you want in a working chisel rather than a display one — it takes a hard temper so the edge lasts through hardwood, but it is not so brittle that a corner chips the first time you meet a knot or a hidden nail. It also means the edge comes back quickly on an oilstone rather than fighting you.
The blades are machine ground over the full surface, and that is the specification that separates a usable chisel from a frustrating one. A chisel cuts on the flat back, not just the bevel. If the back is not flat, the tool will not pare a true surface however sharp you get it, and you will spend a long first evening lapping it flat before you can use it. Full-surface grinding means far less of that work before the tool earns its keep.
The orange and black handles are Harden's own, and there is a practical benefit beyond branding: a bright handle is visible against sawdust and timber on a bench or a floor, which is where chisels get stepped on and dropped.
Carpenters and joiners are the obvious buyers, along with furniture makers and shopfitters. Beyond woodwork, a set of chisels lives in most maintenance kits for door and window work — easing a sticking door, recutting a hinge recess, cleaning out an old mortice. Hardware shops serving the building trade sell the four-piece set far more readily than individual chisels, because it is the natural first purchase.
Buy a honing guide and a stone with them if you do not already have one; a chisel is only as good as its last sharpening. Ask on WhatsApp and we will price them together, delivered island-wide.
