13mm is the chisel you will use more than all the others put together. If you own one wood chisel, this is the width — it is the standard size for a butt hinge on an interior door, and it is narrow enough to work into a housing yet wide enough to pare a surface without leaving ridges.

Hinge work is the daily job. Marking round the leaf, chopping the waste and paring the recess to depth is exactly what a 13mm blade is proportioned for, and doing it with a wider chisel means working in from both edges and hoping the two halves meet flat. Beyond hinges it is the general-purpose size: cleaning out a mortice, trimming a tenon to fit, easing a rebate, cutting a shallow housing for a shelf, lifting old putty or paint out of a rebate before reglazing.

The blade is chrome vanadium, hardened and tempered to hold an edge in hardwood without being brittle enough to chip on a knot. That balance is the whole argument for Cr-V in an edge tool — a harder steel holds longer but breaks a corner off the first time it meets a nail in reclaimed timber, and on site that happens.

It is machine ground over the full surface. The reason to care is that a chisel does its accurate work on the flat back, not the bevel. Registering the flat against a shoulder and paring is only true if the back really is flat, and a chisel that arrives ground properly saves an evening of lapping before it is worth using.

The two-colour orange and black handle is Harden's, and it earns its keep on a job by being findable — chisels vanish into shavings and offcuts, and a bright handle is one you do not tread on.

One piece of advice worth more than any specification: keep it sharp and keep it for wood. A dull chisel needs force, and force is what makes a chisel slip and cut the hand holding the work. Do not use it as a screwdriver, a paint scraper or a lever — that is what rounds the corners and bends the edge.
