32mm is the widest chisel in the Harden range and the one that sits outside the standard four-piece set, which tells you something about it: this is a specialist width bought by people who already know they need it.
It is a paring chisel. At this width you are not chopping a mortice — you are flattening. The work is cleaning up wide tenon cheeks on heavy framing, paring the bottom of a broad housing, flushing a large glued joint, trimming timber framing and beam work, and truing a wide surface that a smaller blade would leave in steps. Anywhere the job is to remove a shaving across a broad area and leave it flat, a wide blade registers better and cuts truer than a narrow one.
The blade is chrome vanadium, hardened and tempered to hold its edge in hardwood while keeping enough toughness that the corners survive. Corner survival is the practical issue on a wide chisel: the corners lead the cut, they are the thinnest part of the edge, and they are what meets the knot first.
Full-surface machine grinding is the specification that makes a 32mm chisel worth owning at all. The accuracy of a paring cut comes entirely from the flat back sitting true on the work. On a blade this wide, a hollow of a few hundredths across the face turns into a visible curve on every surface you pare, and flattening a 32mm back by hand on a stone is genuinely slow work. Ground flat at the factory, it is usable from the first day.
The orange and black Harden handle is bright enough to spot in shavings and offcuts.
Technique matters more at this size than any other. Push with the shoulder rather than the wrist, take thin shavings rather than deep bites, and never lever — a wide blade gives so much purchase that levering feels reasonable right up until the steel snaps. Keep both hands behind the edge.
This is a chisel for joiners and furniture makers doing substantial work, for timber framers and stair builders, for boat and heavy carpentry, and for anyone dressing large sections. It is not a first chisel and it is not a site chisel for hinge work — for that the 13mm and 25mm are the right buys, and the 4-piece set is the sensible starting point.
Because it is a less common size, it is worth ordering rather than assuming it is on a shelf somewhere. Message us on WhatsApp and we will confirm stock and deliver island-wide.
