A 25mm chisel is a paring tool first and a chopping tool second, and that is the way to think about buying one. The width is what you want when the job is to make a broad surface flat and true.
The classic job is a door lock. Recessing a mortice lock faceplate or a striking plate means cutting a clean, flat-bottomed rectangle wider than any narrow chisel will manage in one registration, and a 25mm blade covers most of it in a single bearing surface. The same applies to cleaning up the cheeks of a large tenon, flattening the bottom of a wide housing, trimming a proud edge flush after glue-up, and paring a scribed joint where skirting meets an uneven wall.
The blade is chrome vanadium — hard enough to hold an edge through hardwood and dense imported timber, tough enough that a corner does not break away when the chisel finds a knot. That toughness matters more on a wide blade, because the corners of a 25mm chisel do a lot of the work and are the first thing to suffer.
It is machine ground across the full surface, and on a blade this wide that specification is doing real work. A wide chisel is only accurate if its back is genuinely flat: you register the back on the work and push, and any hollow in it transfers straight into the surface you are cutting. Getting a 25mm back flat by hand on a stone is slow, tedious work, so a factory-ground face is worth having.
The orange and black handle is Harden's own and is easy to find on a bench covered in shavings.
A note on technique that saves both the tool and your hands. Wide chisels invite people to lever with them, because there is so much blade to grip — do not. Levering is how chisels snap. And with a blade this size, always keep the hand holding the work behind the cutting edge, never in front of it, because a 25mm blade under a mallet blow carries real force.
The buyers are carpenters fitting doors and locks, joiners and furniture makers cleaning up joints, shopfitters, and stair and window makers. Maintenance and building teams keep one for door hardware. Hardware shops selling to the building trade find the 25mm the second-most-asked-for size after 13mm.
The 4-piece set covers 6, 13, 19 and 25mm, so if you do not already own the smaller ones the set is usually better value than buying up one at a time. Ask on WhatsApp and we will price both and deliver island-wide.
