At 235mm long with a 44mm blade, this is the general-purpose bench plane — the size that does the work a short block plane cannot, because sole length is what makes a plane cut straight rather than merely smooth.
That is the whole principle behind buying a longer plane. A short sole rides up and down over the hollows in a board and takes shavings off the high spots and the low spots alike, leaving it just as wavy as it started. A long sole bridges the hollows, so the blade only touches the high points, and the board comes flat. 235mm is enough to true the edge of a door, straighten a board for a glued joint, flatten a small panel, or dress the face of a piece of framing.
The body is steel, giving the rigidity a plane needs to hold its sole flat under the pressure of the cut. A flexing sole means chatter, and chatter means a rippled surface and a torn grain. Steel also brings mass, and mass is what carries the plane through hard grain without stalling — it is why a heavy plane feels easier to use than a light one over a long stroke.
The blade is high carbon steel, 44mm wide. High carbon takes a keener edge than most alloys and comes back on a stone quickly, which matters because a plane iron is sharpened often. A wider iron also covers more of a board per pass, so an edge or a panel goes flat in fewer strokes.
The handle is PP plastic — stable in humidity, and it will not split or come loose the way a timber handle can.
Work with the grain wherever you can, and if the surface starts to tear, turn the board round and plane the other way rather than pressing harder. Set the iron fine: a plane taking a thin continuous shaving cuts faster, more accurately and with far less effort than one set deep, and it leaves a surface that needs no sanding at all.
The regular buyers are joiners and carpenters, furniture makers, shopfitters and door hangers — anyone whose work involves making an edge straight rather than just taking the corner off it. Building maintenance teams use one for doors and frames that have moved.
If you also want a small plane for one-handed trimming and end-grain work, the 135mm steel plane and the block planers are the companions to this rather than alternatives. Message us on WhatsApp for a combined price, delivered island-wide.
