Wire Brush

The head is steel wire, and it works by abrasion — dragging hundreds of stiff wire tips across a surface to break off rust, mill scale, loose paint, weld spatter and hardened dirt. Nothing else does that job as quickly by hand. Chemical rust removers need time and a clean surface to begin with; a grinder is faster but takes metal with it and cannot be used near anything delicate.

The honest reason it matters is preparation. Paint, primer and rust converter all fail if they are applied over loose rust or flaking paint — not immediately, but within months, and then the whole job has to be done again. The brushing is the part that decides whether the coating lasts. Anyone who has watched new paint lift off a gate in sheets a year after painting has seen what skipping it costs.

It is also the standard tool between welding passes, for knocking slag and spatter off a bead so you can see the weld and so the next run has clean metal to fuse into.

Use it with the tips of the wires rather than laying the brush flat — the ends do the cutting, and pressing the whole head down just bends the wires over and wears them out. When the wires have splayed and shortened, replace it: a worn brush polishes rather than cuts, and people go on using it long past the point where it does anything.

Wear eye protection. Wire brushing throws rust particles and, in time, broken wire bristles, and a wire in the eye is a hospital visit.
