3Pcs Chalk Line Reel Set (30m/120g)

The method is simple and old. Chalk powder coats a string wound on a reel; you hook one end, pull the line taut across the work, lift it and let it go, and it snaps down leaving a straight chalk line on the surface. Thirty metres of line means you can strike a line across a whole floor, a run of wall, a roof or a slab in one go.

That is a job with no real alternative. Marking a 10-metre line with a tape and a straightedge means a series of joined-up segments, and every join is a chance to drift. A chalk line is straight because a taut string is straight.

The set includes the 30m reel, a 120g bottle of blue chalk powder to refill it, and a spirit bubble. The bubble is a genuinely useful addition rather than a token: it lets you check that a line you are about to strike is level, so you can set out a datum line round a room, mark a course for tiling or blockwork, or fix a level line for a suspended ceiling without a separate level.

A few practical points. Blue chalk is the standard permanent-ish colour and shows well on concrete and timber; be aware it can be difficult to remove from porous or finished surfaces, so on anything that will be visible use a colour meant to be temporary or test first. Keep the line taut and lift it straight up before releasing — lifting at an angle throws the line sideways. And on a long run outdoors, wind will bow the line; hold it down at the midpoint and snap each half separately.

Refill the reel before it stops marking rather than after; a line that only marks intermittently wastes more time than refilling.
