The material is 65Mn, a manganese spring steel, and it is the right choice for a scraper blade for the same reason it is used for saw plate: it takes a genuinely hard temper so the edge stays keen, while retaining enough springiness that a thin blade flexes rather than snapping when you catch an edge.

The argument for keeping a pack of these on hand is simple economics of effort. A scraper blade goes blunt or picks up a nick very quickly — one contact with a screw head, a nail or a hard cement lump does it — and the moment it does, the tool needs force instead of sharpness. Force is exactly what puts scratches on the glass, tile or worktop you are cleaning. So the blade is not really a consumable to be eked out; it is the thing that decides whether the job comes out well.

Most people run a scraper blade far too long. If you find yourself pressing hard, or going over the same paint spot several times, change it.

A note on handling, because these are sharper than they look. Blades come in a pack and the edges are exposed; keep them in their holder rather than loose in a tool bag, and snap used ones into a tin or a blade box rather than dropping them in a bin where someone empties it by hand.

When scraping glass, work at a shallow angle and push in one direction only. Dragging a blade back across glass under pressure is the usual cause of the long scratch that ruins a pane, and it is nearly always done by someone rushing with a blunt blade.
