Brass Padlock (20mm)

That is not a criticism, because most of what people lock does not need serious security. A 20mm lock is the right size for a toolbox, a cabinet, a locker, a meter box, luggage, a small store cupboard, a gate latch that only needs to stay shut, or anything where the purpose is to stop casual opening and to make it obvious if someone has interfered. Putting a 60mm lock on a locker door is pointless — the door will fail long before the lock does.

Brass is the specification worth understanding, and in Sri Lanka it is the reason to buy brass at all. Brass does not rust. A steel padlock left outdoors here, particularly anywhere near the coast, seizes solid within a season or two, and the usual outcome is that the owner cuts off their own lock. Brass keeps working. The shackle is hardened steel because brass alone would be far too soft to resist cutting — so the lock combines a corrosion-proof body with a hard shackle, which is the sensible arrangement.

Double bolted means the shackle is locked on both sides rather than one. That is a genuine security feature: a single-bolted lock can be opened by cutting or shimming just one side, whereas double bolting means both sides must be defeated.

The interior is rustproofed, which is the part that decides whether the lock still turns in three years. It comes with three brass keys.

The rule that applies to every padlock: it is only as strong as the hasp it hangs on. A good lock on a hasp fixed with short screws into timber protects nothing.

A squirt of dry lubricant into the cylinder once or twice a year keeps it turning sweetly. Do not use heavy oil or grease, which collects dust and eventually gums the mechanism.
