Thrust ratio is the mechanical advantage between the trigger and the rod. A basic gun might be around 10:1; a high thrust gun multiplies your hand force far more. That does not matter at all with soft bathroom silicone in warm weather. It matters enormously with stiff material: construction adhesives, high-modulus sealants, polyurethane, and any cartridge that has been sitting somewhere cool. With a low-ratio gun those need a hard squeeze that tires your hand within a few cartridges and gives you a bead that surges as your grip varies. With a high thrust gun the same material comes out under light, steady pressure — which means an even bead and a hand that still works at the end of the day.

It is also the difference between being able to use a material at all and giving up on it. Anyone who has fought a cartridge of construction adhesive with a cheap gun knows the feeling.

The 15" length accommodates longer cartridges than the standard 300ml size, so check what your material comes in before ordering.

The body is aluminium, which keeps a tool of this length manageable — a 15" steel gun held up at a window head is genuinely heavy — and does not corrode. The frame is fine steel where the load is carried.

The same technique advice applies as to any sealant work. Cut the nozzle at 45 degrees, no larger than the joint needs. Push rather than pull, so material is forced into the joint. Tool the bead before it skins.

One caution particular to high thrust guns: the mechanical advantage that makes stiff material easy also makes it easy to over-deliver and to burst a cartridge if the nozzle is blocked. Check the nozzle is clear before squeezing harder.
