Staples (T53/8)

The designation is worth understanding, because using the wrong staple is the single biggest cause of trouble with staple guns. T53 describes the crown width and wire gauge; the 8 is the leg length in millimetres. A gun's magazine is machined for one crown width and one wire size, and a staple outside that will either not feed at all or will feed and then jam — and clearing a jam in a spring-loaded gun is fiddly and mildly hazardous. Always match the staple to the gun rather than assuming close enough will do.

Leg length is the choice you make per job. Eight millimetres is a short leg, and short is right for thin material into solid timber: fabric and webbing, plastic sheeting and vapour barrier, insulation facing, mesh, thin card and paper backing. The rule is that the leg needs enough length to get a firm hold in the substrate but not so much that it either punches straight through thin material or fails to seat flush in hardwood.

The galvanised surface matters more than it looks. Bare steel staples in anything that gets damp — roofing felt, sheeting, outdoor fabric, anything against masonry — corrode within a season, and a corroded staple both loses its grip and stains the material around it with rust. Galvanising is what makes them acceptable for work that is not permanently indoors and dry. For genuinely exterior or coastal work, stainless staples are better still.

Buy more than you think you need. Staple guns fire quickly, staples are the cheapest part of the job, and running out mid-way through fixing a sheet means the fixing pattern ends up uneven.
