A three-use gun fires more than one kind of fastener, and that is the whole reason to choose it over a plain staple gun.
A staple holds thin, flexible material well, because the crown spreads the grip across the surface — fabric, felt, insulation, sheeting, mesh. But a staple is the wrong fastener for anything with structure of its own: a bead of timber, a thin moulding, a panel edge, a picture frame. There the crown sits proud and visible, and the two legs split a narrow section. A brad or pin has a small head that disappears below the surface and a single shank that does not split the timber. Owning one tool that does both means you use the right fastener rather than the one that is loaded.
It is built from fine steel with a chrome-plated handle — the construction a spring-driven gun needs, since the mechanism throws a hardened striker at speed thousands of times and a light frame quickly begins to misfire and leave fasteners proud.
It comes with 600 nails to start, and takes #620828 and #620829 staples. Using the specified fastener matters: the wrong length or crown jams the magazine, and clearing a jam in a spring-loaded gun is fiddly.
Some practical guidance. Hold the gun flat and press it firmly against the work before squeezing — a gun held off the surface or at an angle fires a fastener that skids and can exit sideways at speed. Test on an offcut of the same material first, because drive depth varies with timber hardness; a fastener that stands proud in hardwood will punch straight through softwood. And keep your other hand well away from behind the work.
A plain word about capability: a hand gun cannot compete with a pneumatic or cordless nailer for volume or consistency. For a whole room of beading, hire or buy a nailer. For the constant small jobs that come up in between, this is the tool that is always to hand and needs no compressor.
