A 50mm scraper is the narrow one, and narrow is a deliberate choice rather than a smaller version of the same tool.
A narrow blade concentrates all the force you apply into a small width, so it gets under paint that a wide blade would skate over. It also fits where a wide blade cannot: window frames and glazing bars, beading, mouldings, door rebates, the edges of panels, and into corners where a 100mm blade simply will not reach. On a window with small panes, a 50mm scraper is the only one you will use all day.
The blade is stainless steel, tempered and quenched. Stainless matters more than it looks on a scraper. These tools live wet — used for stripping damp paint, cleaning off wallpaper paste, scraping filler and render — and a carbon steel blade rusts within a job or two, after which it stains everything it touches and drags instead of cutting. Tempering and quenching are what let the edge hold rather than roll over on the first hard spot.
The feature worth knowing about is the metal running through to the end of the handle: it means you can strike the end with a hammer. That turns the scraper into a chisel for the stubborn work — driving under thick built-up paint, breaking off hardened render or tile adhesive, lifting a stuck section of trim. On a scraper without a through-handle, hitting the end splits the handle off.
Use it at a low angle and push away from your body. A scraper driven at a steep angle digs into the surface underneath rather than lifting what is on top of it, and on timber that means gouges you then have to fill.
Keep the edge square by touching it up on a file — a rounded scraper edge stops cutting and starts polishing, and most people carry on using it anyway.
The buyers are painters and decorators, glaziers, joiners and shopfitters, and building maintenance teams.
