A 100mm scraper covers ground, and on a large flat area that is exactly what you want.
Stripping a wall, a ceiling, a flush door, a large panel or a section of render is work measured in square metres, and a wide blade lifts four times the width of a 50mm scraper on every stroke. When you are removing old wallpaper or flaking emulsion across a whole room, the difference between a narrow and a wide blade is an afternoon.
The trade-off is honest and worth understanding before you buy this size alone. A wide blade needs a reasonably flat surface and even pressure across its whole width. On an uneven, patched or old surface it rides on the high points and skips the hollows, and it is harder to keep flat, so it tends to dig a corner in. That is why most decorators own all three widths and use the 100mm for open areas, the 75mm for general work and the 50mm for frames and detail.
The blade is stainless steel, tempered and quenched. Stainless is the correct material for a tool used constantly on wet paint, wallpaper paste and fresh filler — carbon steel rusts through a single job in this climate, and a rusted blade drags and stains. Tempering keeps the edge from rolling when it hits a nail head or hardened filler.
The steel runs through to the end of the handle so the end can be struck with a hammer, turning the scraper into a broad chisel for driving under thick built-up paint or hardened render. Without that through-tang, hitting the handle end simply breaks it.
Keep the angle low and push away from your body — a steep angle digs into the substrate, and across a 100mm width that produces a long gouge rather than a small one.
File the edge square when it stops cutting. A rounded edge polishes instead of lifting, which is why a scraper seems to stop working long before the steel is worn out.
The buyers are painters and decorators, plasterers, building maintenance and refurbishment crews, and property managers preparing units between tenants.
