SDS-PLUS Paint Mixer (400x80x10)

The reason it matters is not speed alone. Two-part materials, tile adhesive, render, filler and self-levelling compound all depend on being mixed completely — unmixed pockets do not cure, and they show up later as soft spots, colour variation or failed adhesion. Paint that has stood needs the settled pigment and body lifted off the bottom, which a stick does not do. A powered paddle circulates the whole container.

This is the 400 x 80mm size — a 400mm shaft with an 80mm paddle. That suits normal buckets and paint tins, mixing tile adhesive, filler, small render batches and paint. It is the size that fits what most people actually mix.

The shank is SDS-Plus, which fits directly into a rotary hammer with no chuck and no adaptor.

And that leads to the most important thing on this page: use rotation only, never hammer mode. An SDS machine can hammer as well as rotate, and running a mixer with the hammer engaged pounds the paddle against nothing, destroys the shank and can wreck the tool holder. Set the machine to rotation-only before you start. If your rotary hammer has no rotation-only setting, do not use it for mixing.

Two other points. Use a low speed — high speed whips air into the material, and air in tile adhesive or render weakens it and causes pinholes in paint. And start and stop the paddle inside the material rather than lifting it out while running, unless you want the walls redecorated.

The steel is carbon steel with zinc plating, which resists the corrosion that would otherwise start the moment a paddle is left dirty and wet. Clean it immediately after use; cured adhesive on a paddle is very difficult to remove and unbalances it.
