Sanding Block (230x80)

A 230 x 80mm block spreads the pressure across a flat face, so the paper cuts the high points and leaves the hollows alone until the surface comes level. On a plastered wall, a filled patch or a timber surface, that is the difference between a wall that looks flat under a light and one that does not.

The construction is double EVA foam with a rubber skin and a wood handle. The foam is the clever part: it is firm enough to hold the paper flat, but it has enough give to follow a gentle curve and to stop a hard edge digging in and scoring the surface. A solid timber block does not, which is why it leaves tram lines on soft plaster.

The rubber skin grips the paper so it does not creep as you work, and the wooden handle lets you push down and forward with your palm rather than pinching with fingertips — which matters over a whole wall, because sanding is tiring and a block you can lean on is one you keep using properly.

It takes standard sandpaper, which you cut and fix to the face.

One piece of practical advice that saves a lot of work: use the coarsest grit that will level the surface, then change to finer grit for the finish. Trying to level with fine paper takes ten times as long and clogs the paper immediately. And keep the block moving in overlapping strokes rather than working one patch until it is right, which is how you end up with a dish in the wall.

Always wear a dust mask. Plaster and filler dust is fine enough to reach deep into the lungs, and sanding a whole room produces a great deal of it.
