Rectangular Lock (90mm)

The body is wide and squared, which means the shackle is shrouded — there is far less of it exposed on each side than on a conventional padlock. That matters because the shackle is what gets attacked. A padlock is almost never picked; it is cut, and it is cut at the shackle with bolt croppers. Reducing the exposed length reduces the space to get a jaw in, and a cropper that cannot get a purchase cannot cut.

The shackle itself is hardened steel, chrome plated. Hardened is the operative word: an unhardened shackle cuts like cheese, and the hardening is most of what you are paying for in any padlock.

The body is iron, which gives mass and resistance to being struck or levered, and the cylinder is brass. Brass in the cylinder is a sensible arrangement — the lock mechanism is the part that suffers from corrosion, and a seized lock is a lock you end up cutting off yourself. It comes with five keys, which is genuinely useful for a store or a gate that several people need to open.

The honest point that applies to every padlock ever made: a lock is only as strong as what it hangs on. A 90mm lock on a thin hasp fixed with short screws is defeated by a screwdriver in ten seconds, and the lock is untouched. Spend proportionate money on a heavy hasp and staple, bolt it through rather than screwing into timber, and make sure the fixings cannot be reached when the hasp is closed. Most break-ins through padlocked doors go through the hasp, the staple or the door itself.

For humid and coastal locations, oil the shackle and squirt a little dry lubricant into the cylinder every few months.
