Magnetic Plumb Bob (6Mx400G)

A spirit level tells you a surface is vertical only over its own length, and a 600mm level says nothing useful about a three-metre wall or a column. A plumb bob on 6 metres of line establishes true vertical over the whole height at once. That is why it remains the reference for setting out columns, door and window frames, formwork, wall lines, and for transferring a point from a floor to a ceiling or from a slab to a level above.

At 400g it has the weight to hang steady rather than drifting about, which is the practical difference between a working plumb bob and a toy. Heavier bobs settle faster and are less affected by air movement.

Two features make this version more practical than a plain bob. It is magnetic, so it can be hung directly from steelwork, a steel frame or formwork clamps without rigging a bracket. And the tip retracts when not in use, which protects both the point and whatever is in your bag with it — a plumb bob point is precision-ground and easily blunted, and a blunt point cannot be read against a mark accurately.

As the spec notes, it is also used alongside optical instruments — a theodolite or total station set over a ground mark uses a plumb reference to sit exactly above the point.

Using it well is mostly patience: let it stop swinging completely before you read it, and shelter it from wind or draughts, which on a tall drop will move it several millimetres.
