Foam Gun (320)

With a straw you get one flow rate — everything — and no way to stop cleanly. With a gun you have a trigger and an adjusting screw, so you can lay a fine bead into a gap around a window frame, or fill a large void quickly, and stop without the foam continuing to run. The 320mm barrel also reaches into a cavity, behind a frame or up into a soffit where the can itself will not go.

The body is aluminium alloy with a metal trigger, which is the specification worth paying for. Foam guns live hard and get dropped, and a plastic-bodied gun cracks at the collar where the can screws on — which is also the joint that has to seal against pressure.

The needle is Teflon-coated stainless steel, and that is the part that decides whether the gun survives. Cured foam sticks tenaciously to everything except PTFE; a coated needle can be cleaned where a bare one seizes solid.

Which leads to the one thing that ruins more foam guns than anything else: cleaning. Never leave a gun standing with a spent can removed and foam in the barrel — it cures inside and the gun is finished. Either leave a part-used can screwed on and pressurised, which keeps the foam liquid for weeks, or flush the gun through with foam cleaner immediately after removing the can. This is not a maintenance suggestion, it is the difference between a gun that lasts years and one that lasts a day.

Each gun is air-pressure tested before it leaves the factory.

Wear gloves and eye protection. Uncured foam sticks to skin and does not wash off — it has to wear off — and it is very difficult to remove from eyes, hair and clothing. Also remember that expanding foam keeps expanding: overfilling a gap around a window or door frame can bow the frame as it cures.
