The skeleton frame takes a normal 300ml cartridge, which is what silicone, acrylic, adhesive and most sealants are sold in. The trigger drives a pushing rod against the cartridge plunger, and the rod is the part that matters: a rod that is rough or bent binds in the frame, so the flow comes out in surges rather than evenly, and an uneven bead is a bead you have to go back and tidy. The smooth rod on this one is what keeps the delivery steady.

It is made from fine steel rather than pressed thin plate, which is the difference between a gun that lasts and one whose frame distorts after a few stiff cartridges and then jams.

For most sealing work — bathroom and kitchen silicone, window and door perimeter sealing, filling movement joints, general adhesive work — this is all the gun anyone needs.

The honest limits. It has no drip-proof release, so when you let go of the trigger the pressure in the cartridge keeps pushing sealant out for a second or two; you have to release the rod manually to stop the run. If you seal all day, the version with a drip-proof mechanism saves a great deal of wiping. And for very stiff materials — high-modulus adhesives, cold sealant — a high thrust ratio gun takes far less hand force.

A few things that improve any sealant job more than the gun does. Cut the nozzle at 45 degrees and no bigger than the joint needs — most untidy beads are the result of too big a hole. Push the gun rather than pull it, so the sealant is forced into the joint instead of laid on top. And tool the bead within a couple of minutes with a wet finger or a shaped tool before it skins.
