Brass Padlock (60mm)

Body width and shackle diameter are both at their maximum here, and both are what an attack has to overcome. At this size hand croppers are not going to do it — defeating the lock itself needs large bolt croppers or a grinder, which are heavy, obvious and take time. That is the real function of a big padlock: it makes the attack slow, noisy and visible.

The applications are site compounds and containers, warehouse and distribution doors, fuel and chemical stores, plant and machinery, main gates, and anywhere insurers take an interest in what the door is secured with.

Brass matters just as much at this size as at the small end, and the consequences of ignoring it are worse. A large steel padlock left in Sri Lankan humidity or coastal air seizes, and a seized 60mm lock on your own compound gate means an angle grinder and a wasted morning. Brass does not corrode, so it turns years later. The shackle is hardened steel, which is where the cut resistance comes from — brass alone is far too soft.

Double bolted means the shackle is locked on both sides rather than one, so an attack must defeat both. The interior is rustproofed, and three brass keys are supplied.

And the point that matters more than anything on this page: at 60mm, the lock will almost never be the weakest part. Fitting a lock of this class to a hasp screwed into a timber door, or to a thin staple, is spending money for nothing — the attack will simply go through the hasp, the staple, the hinges or the door. If you are buying at this level, buy the hasp to match: heavy gauge, through-bolted with backing plates, hinges secured against removal, and fixings concealed when the hasp is closed. Look at the whole door, not the padlock.

Dry lubricant in the cylinder once or twice a year keeps it turning.
