Brass Padlock (50mm)

The practical difference is in what tools defeat it. Small hand croppers will deal with a light padlock; a 50mm brass lock with a thick hardened shackle needs substantially larger tools, which are conspicuous, heavy to carry and far less likely to be to hand. Most security is about raising the effort and the visibility required, not about being impregnable.

This is the size for a warehouse or store door, a workshop, a container, a main gate, a compound, plant and machinery, a fuel store, or anything holding stock worth taking.

Brass matters more, not less, at this size. A big steel padlock exposed to Sri Lankan humidity and coastal air seizes just as readily as a small one, and a seized 50mm lock is a serious problem — you now need an angle grinder to get into your own store. Brass does not corrode, so the lock still turns years later. The hardened steel shackle provides the cut resistance that brass alone could not.

Double bolting means the shackle locks on both sides, so both must be cut or defeated rather than one. The interior is rustproofed and it comes with three brass keys.

At this level the hasp question becomes the main question. A 50mm lock is worth having only if what it hangs on is comparable: a heavy hasp and staple, bolted through the door with carriage bolts and backing plates rather than screwed, with the fixings concealed when closed. It is common to see an expensive padlock protecting a hasp that a crowbar removes in one movement — and in that case you have bought nothing.

Keep the cylinder lubricated with a dry lubricant once or twice a year; heavy oil attracts dust and eventually gums the mechanism.
