Brass Padlock (40mm)

It is the sensible choice for a gate, a shed or outbuilding, a store room, a workshop door, a roller shutter, a site toolbox, a water pump housing or a generator enclosure. The body is wide enough and the shackle thick enough to resist hand tools and small croppers, which covers the great majority of opportunist attempts, while still being a lock you can carry in a pocket and fit to an ordinary hasp.

Brass is doing specific work in this climate. Steel padlocks in Sri Lankan humidity — and anywhere within reach of salt air — corrode and seize, and the commonest reason a padlock has to be cut off is that its own owner can no longer turn the key. Brass does not rust, so it opens in three years as easily as on the day it was fitted. The shackle is hardened steel, because brass on its own is soft enough to cut easily; combining a corrosion-proof body with a hardened shackle is exactly the right compromise for outdoor use here.

Double bolted means the shackle is secured on both sides, so an attack must defeat both rather than one. The interior is rustproofed, which is what keeps the mechanism turning over the years, and three brass keys are supplied.

Worth repeating because it is where security is actually lost: the lock is usually the strongest part of the arrangement. A 40mm brass padlock on a hasp screwed to a timber door with 25mm screws is opened in seconds with a screwdriver, and the padlock is not even touched. Fit a heavy hasp and staple, bolt it right through the door, and make sure the fixing heads are covered when it is closed.

A little dry lubricant in the cylinder once or twice a year keeps it sweet. Heavy oil or grease collects dust and eventually jams it.
