Brass Padlock (30mm)

It suits a shed door, a garden gate, a store cupboard, a tool chest, a bicycle or scooter accessory, a roller shutter latch on something low-risk, and internal doors in a workplace. The step up from 20mm brings a thicker shackle and a wider body, which means more resistance to a small pair of croppers and to being levered — enough to defeat opportunism, which is what most locks are actually up against.

Brass is the reason to choose this over a cheaper steel padlock in Sri Lanka. Steel padlocks left outdoors in this humidity, and especially near the coast, seize within a season or two, and the usual ending is the owner cutting off their own lock because the key will no longer turn. Brass does not rust, so it still opens years later. The shackle is hardened steel because brass by itself would be far too soft to resist a cutter — a corrosion-proof body with a hardened shackle is the right combination for this climate.

Double bolted means the shackle locks on both sides. A single-bolted lock can be defeated by attacking one side only; double bolting requires both.

The interior is rustproofed, which is what determines whether the mechanism still turns in a few years' time, and it comes with three brass keys.

The standing truth about padlocks: the lock is rarely the weak point. A 30mm lock on a hasp fixed with short screws into a timber door is opened with a screwdriver, and the lock is undamaged. If the contents matter, spend on a through-bolted hasp and staple and make sure the fixings are concealed when it is closed.

Keep the cylinder working with a little dry lubricant once or twice a year. Avoid heavy oil, which attracts dust and eventually gums it up.
