An angle grinder is not a polisher. A typical 115mm grinder runs at somewhere around eleven thousand revolutions a minute, and polishing wants a small fraction of that. Wool spinning at grinder speed generates heat extremely quickly, and heat is what causes every bad outcome in polishing: it burns through paint, it can crack glass, it discolours and stains marble and stone by heating the surface unevenly, and on stainless steel it blues the metal. None of that can be undone by polishing harder.

Polishing is properly done on a variable speed polisher, or on a grinder that has genuine speed control, run at the low end, kept moving constantly, and used with the correct compound for the material being worked. The compound does the cutting; the wool carries it and distributes the pressure. A dry woollen disc on a hard surface is just friction.

Used correctly, this is the finishing tool for exactly the materials its spec lists. Glaziers and glass fabricators use wool and compound to polish edges and remove light scratching. Marble, granite and terrazzo fitters use it for final surface polish. Stainless fabricators use it to bring a finish back after grinding and blending. Vehicle detailers use it for paint correction and final gloss.

Work up through your abrasives first. Polishing cannot remove scratches, it can only make an already smooth surface bright, so anything visible under the light before you start will still be there afterwards, only shinier.
