One hundred and twenty is fine. It removes very little material and leaves a smooth, even surface, which makes it a finishing wheel rather than a shaping one. Use it after the coarse wheel has done the cutting, to take out the scratches that wheel left, to blend a repair into the surrounding surface, to prepare metal for polishing or plating, and on timber where a coarse abrasive would tear the grain rather than cut it.

Ask it to do the coarse work and it will disappoint you: fine abrasive on heavy material simply loads up, glazes, and generates heat while removing almost nothing. That is not a fault in the wheel, it is being asked for the wrong job.

Used in the right order the pair is quick. Sixty shapes and removes, one hundred and twenty refines, and the second stage is short because the first left only shallow marks to take out.

The one inch diameter keeps its advantage in fine work as well as coarse: it reaches into corners, bores, tube interiors, radii and recesses where nothing larger will fit, which is precisely where a good finish is hardest to achieve by hand.

Keep the shaft short in the chuck and run at a moderate speed. Fine abrasive at high speed burns rather than cuts, and on a small wheel it is easy to reach a surface speed that scorches timber and blues steel.

The abrasive is aluminium oxide, specified for steel and wood. On aluminium it will clog quickly.
