A pilot hole is the small hole drilled before a screw goes in, and it does more than people credit. It gives the screw thread something to cut into rather than forcing timber apart, which is what splits a board near an end or an edge. It stops the screw wandering off the mark. And it takes a great deal of the effort out of driving, which on a long screw or a hard timber is the difference between a driven screw and a snapped one. At 2mm you are piloting the smaller gauges of wood screw, and drilling for small self tappers, panel pins and light fixings.

Worth knowing what DIN338 on the spec actually means, since it appears on every bit in this group. It is the German dimensional standard for jobber length twist drills, and it fixes the overall length, the flute length and the geometry for each diameter. That sounds like paperwork and it is genuinely useful: it means a 2mm bit from one maker is the same length and proportion as a 2mm bit from another, so it fits the same holders, reaches the same depth and behaves predictably. A bit made to no standard at all can be any length its factory felt like, which matters the moment you are working to a depth.

The shank is a 1/4 inch hex rather than a plain round one, so it drops straight into a cordless impact driver or a quick change holder. On small bits that is a real advantage, because a 2mm round shank in a three jaw chuck is easy to under tighten and a slipping bit is a snapped bit.

The tip is M2 high speed steel with a 135 degree split point and a titanium coating.
