Look at the end of an ordinary drill bit and you will see two cutting edges meeting at a point, usually ground at 118 degrees. Where they meet there is a short flat area called the chisel edge, and that chisel edge does not really cut at all. It scrapes and pushes. On timber it hardly matters, because the wood fibres hold the tip. On steel it matters a great deal: the bit skates across the surface looking for somewhere to bite, which is why generations of fitters have been taught to make a centre punch mark first.

A 135 degree point is blunter in profile, and split means the chisel edge has been ground away into two additional small cutting edges that reach almost to the centre. The result is a bit that cuts from the moment it touches, starts where you put it, and needs no punch mark. On a vertical surface, overhead, or on a smooth painted panel where a punch is awkward, that is the difference between a hole in the right place and a bright scratch across the work.

It also means less pressure is needed to get started, which suits a cordless driver rather than a heavy corded drill.
