Titanium nitride is the gold coloured finish on these bits. It is genuinely useful: it is very hard, it is slippery, and it reduces the friction between the bit and the material. Less friction means less heat, and heat is what destroys a drill bit, because high speed steel loses its hardness once it gets hot enough. So a coated bit run sensibly will outlast an uncoated one, sometimes by a good margin, particularly in steel.

Now the part that is usually left out. The coating is a few microns thick, which is to say it is a surface treatment and not a different material. It does not turn an ordinary bit into a carbide one, and it cannot make up for a bit being run too fast, pressed too hard or used dry in a material that needed cutting fluid. And the moment the bit is sharpened, the coating at the cutting edge is ground away with the metal behind it, so a resharpened coated bit performs like an uncoated one. That is not a fault, it is simply what a coating is.

The practical conclusion is worth having: buy coated bits because they last longer in normal use, not because they excuse rough treatment, and do not expect a resharpened one to be as good as new.
