Stripping Disc (Φ125x22.2)

The extra diameter over the 115mm disc buys coverage, which on large flat areas is worth having. Stripping a vehicle panel, a bonnet or a door, a run of railings, a tank side or a set of gates goes appreciably faster with a bigger disc simply because each pass covers more ground, and on a job measured in square metres that adds up to real time.

There is a trade, and it is the same one that applies to every accessory that gets bigger. Rim speed rises with diameter, so at a given spindle speed the outer edge of a 125mm disc is moving faster than that of a 115mm one, and it generates more heat. On thin panel steel, heat is not a trivial matter: it causes the panel to expand locally and then contract as it cools, which distorts it, and a distorted panel is a far more expensive problem than the paint you were removing. Keep the disc moving, do not dwell in one spot, and let the panel cool if you can feel it getting hot through a glove.

Check that your grinder is rated for a 125mm accessory and that the guard suits it. Fitting a larger disc to a machine set up for a smaller one leaves part of the disc unguarded, which is exactly the part nearest your hand. The bore must match as well: 22.2mm is standard on 115mm and 125mm machines, while the 100mm disc we list has a 16mm bore.

The disc is a consumable and wears down in diameter as it is used, so a disc that has shrunk noticeably is also running slower at its rim and will feel less effective. It loads with paint and adhesive too, particularly on soft or recently applied coatings, and a loaded disc polishes rather than strips.
