Stripping Disc (Φ115x22.2)

If you own a 115mm grinder, this is the size that fits it, and 22.2mm is the standard bore for that class of machine. That combination makes this the stripping disc most people will actually buy.

The useful thing to say here is when to reach for it rather than for something else, because three tools on this site all strip surfaces and customers routinely buy the wrong one.

If the surface must keep its shape and its thickness, use a stripping disc. Panels, sheet, thin section, anything that will be painted and looked at.

If the coating is thick, hard and heavily corroded, and the underlying steel is substantial enough not to care, a knotted wire brush is faster and cheaper.

If material actually needs to be removed, a weld dressed down or a shape altered, that is a grinding disc or a flap disc and neither of the others will do it.

Getting this right saves money in both directions: a stripping disc worn out trying to do a grinder's job, and a panel thinned by a grinder doing a stripping disc's job.

In use, keep it moving and use the face of the disc flat or at a shallow angle. Standing it on edge concentrates the wear in one place and cuts a groove in the web. Moderate pressure only; the disc works by the abrasive in the web contacting the surface repeatedly, not by force.

Wear eye protection and a mask, because stripping old paint produces a great deal of airborne material and older coatings may contain things you do not want to breathe.
