Thirty two millimetres reaches the sizes the smaller step drills cannot: large cable glands, tank connectors, larger conduit entries, ducting and instrument penetrations, and the bigger holes in enclosures and panel work. For anyone who regularly meets a hole size above 20mm in sheet, this is what saves buying a hole saw and arbor for each one.

Being large has consequences. The bit is heavy and its widest steps have a considerable cutting circumference, so the torque it generates at the top of its range is significant. That means a firm machine held in both hands, a low speed, and the workpiece clamped rather than held. A large step drill that snatches in thin sheet will spin the panel, and a spinning sheet edge cuts badly.

Heat is the other consequence. The larger the step, the longer its cutting edge is in contact and the more heat it makes, so cutting fluid stops being optional on steel at this end of the range. Work in stages, let it cool, and do not lean on it to speed things up.

It is still a sheet material tool. The steps are short, so depth of cut is limited whatever the diameter, and thick plate wants a hole saw or a twist drill instead.

The step increments quoted for this bit and for the three piece set that includes it do not agree with one another, so we would rather check the stock than repeat a figure. Tell us the sizes you need and we will confirm they are on the bit.
