The blade is curved into a gouge rather than being flat, so instead of cutting a line it cuts a trough. Put it into a wall and it removes a strip of material 22mm wide with a rounded bottom, which is very close to the shape a conduit or a small pipe wants to sit in. That means one tool produces the chase, in one pass, at a consistent depth, rather than cutting two lines with a flat chisel and then breaking out everything between them.

For electricians chasing conduit and cable into block and render walls, and for plumbers running small pipe, that is the difference between a tidy channel and a ragged trench that then needs filling with far more mortar than it should. It is faster, it removes less material from the wall, and it makes good more neatly afterwards.

The curved form also holds the chisel in the cut. A flat blade wants to wander sideways along a wall, particularly on render over block where the hardness changes as you go. A gouge sits in the channel it has already made and follows it.

Work along the line rather than straight into the wall, keep the angle shallow so the blade cuts forward, and mark the run first, because a chase in the wrong place is a repair rather than a mistake. Hammer only mode with rotation off, as with every chisel.
