A great deal of construction here uses cement blocks with voids running through them. From the outside a hollow block wall and a solid one look identical once rendered, and that catches people out constantly. A plug set into the thin outer web of a hollow block has almost nothing holding it. It feels tight when you screw into it, because the plug is expanding against the web, and then the whole thing pulls out the first time real load is applied, often taking a piece of the block with it.

The longer bit gives you options. It lets you drill deep enough to find the solid web on the far side of a void, or to pass right through and use a fixing designed for hollow material, such as a toggle or a through bolt. Either way the first step is knowing what you are drilling into, and the drill will tell you: the resistance drops away suddenly when the bit breaks into a void, and the dust coming out changes.

If you meet a void, stop and think rather than pressing on and setting a plug in fresh air. Hollow wall fixings exist precisely for this and we stock them.

The same length also serves for through fixing a bracket and a packer, or reaching masonry behind a thick render or insulation layer.
