Fourteen millimetre holes take heavy expansion anchors and, more often at this size, chemical anchors. A chemical anchor is worth understanding because it solves problems a mechanical one cannot. Instead of expanding against the hole, a resin is injected and a threaded stud or bar is pushed into it, and the resin bonds to both. Since nothing expands, the fixing exerts no outward pressure, so it can be set closer to an edge and closer to its neighbours without splitting the concrete. It also fills an imperfect hole, and it seals the hole against water, which in our climate matters for anything outdoors or in a plant room.

The trade is that a chemical anchor depends entirely on the bond, and the bond depends entirely on a clean hole. Resin sitting on drilling dust is resin bonded to powder. Every chemical anchor failure investigated seriously comes back to the same thing.

Fourteen millimetre fixings carry structural steel to concrete, heavy machinery bases, crane and hoist mountings, large tank and vessel supports, gantries and heavy handrail posts.

At 350mm the bit reaches the embedment depths those anchors require, which are considerably deeper than people expect. A structural anchor may need well over 100mm of embedment, and that is before the thickness of whatever the fixing passes through.
