That is worth preparing for, because it is the commonest way a good bit is ruined. A masonry bit has a carbide tip shaped to crush and chip stone and concrete. It is not designed to cut steel and it will not cut steel. When you hit rebar, the drill stops advancing, the bit starts to squeal or judder, and the temptation is to lean harder. Leaning harder does not cut the bar. It overheats the tip, chips the carbide, and can weaken the braze holding the tip to the body.

The right response is to stop, withdraw, and move the hole. In most situations moving thirty or forty millimetres is enough to miss the bar, and a fixing thirty millimetres from where you planned it is almost always acceptable. Where the position is fixed and the bar cannot be avoided, the answer is a rebar cutting bit or a diamond core, which are different tools entirely.

There is a structural point as well, and it is the more important one. Cutting through reinforcement weakens the element you are drilling into. In a slab, a beam or a column that is not a cosmetic matter, and on any structural member it is worth asking the engineer rather than deciding at the drill. A hole through a wall for a pipe is one thing; a hole through the tension steel in a beam is another.
