Twelve millimetre anchors hold air conditioning condensers and their brackets, water tanks and frames, solar rails, gates, handrails and balustrades, machinery bases, heavy pipe and duct supports, and structural steel to concrete.

Here is the thing that gets overlooked. Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension, and an expansion anchor works by pushing outward against the sides of the hole. Set that anchor close to an edge, or too close to another anchor, and there is not enough material around it to resist the outward push. The result is a crack that runs to the free edge and a fixing that has taken a wedge of concrete with it. It often happens at the moment of tightening, and it always happens on the edge of a slab, a beam, a step or a column face, which is exactly where brackets tend to go.

The general rules are on the anchor manufacturer's data sheet and they are worth reading: keep a sensible distance from any free edge, keep anchors spaced apart from each other, and if the geometry will not allow it, move to a chemical anchor, which does not expand and therefore does not split the concrete the same way. Also check what you are fixing into. Rendered brick and block will not carry what a concrete slab will, and a heavy bracket on a block wall wants a through fixing rather than an anchor.
