A plastic plug is forgiving. It squashes, and a hole that is slightly large or slightly ragged still gives it something to grip. A steel anchor is not forgiving at all. Sleeve anchors, wedge anchors and expansion bolts are engineered to a specific hole diameter, and their entire holding power comes from a metal component expanding against the wall of that hole. Drill it oversize, and there is not enough expansion left in the anchor to reach the concrete properly. The anchor spins or pulls, usually under load, usually later.

So with anchor work the bit is part of the fixing rather than merely the thing that makes a hole. Use the diameter the anchor specifies, which is stamped on its box, and use a bit that is still sharp and still round. A worn bit with a chipped tip cuts an oversize, out of round hole, and that is invisible once the anchor is in.

Ten millimetre anchors are the workhorse size in Sri Lankan construction and services: air conditioning outdoor units and brackets, water tank frames, solar mounting rails, gates and handrails, machinery feet, pipe and duct supports, and structural brackets.

At 160mm the bit suits the standard embedment depths those anchors ask for, with allowance for the bracket, packer or base plate the fixing passes through first.
