SDS-PLUS Point Chisel (14x250)

Every blow the machine delivers carries a fixed amount of energy. Spread that energy across a wide blade and you get a broad, moderate push. Focus it onto a point and the pressure at the tip becomes enormous, which is what cracks hard material apart rather than merely denting it. That makes the point chisel the tool for starting and for breaking up: opening a hole in a concrete or block wall where there is no edge to work from, breaking up a slab, a plinth or a mass of concrete, splitting stone and hard render, and knocking out material that a flat chisel would only skate across.

The way it is used follows from that. A point chisel is not run along a surface. It is placed, driven in until the material around it cracks, then moved and placed again, working outward from the hole it has made, so that each blow has a free face to break towards. Material with somewhere to go breaks easily. Material trapped on all sides simply absorbs the energy and the chisel goes nowhere.

Two things apply to every SDS chisel and are worth stating here. The machine must be in hammer only mode with rotation switched off, because a chisel turning in a rotating chuck will wreck the tool holder and can wrench the machine out of your hands. And a chisel dulls with use and is re sharpened by grinding, taking light passes and cooling it constantly, so the edge never changes colour; colour means the temper is gone and the edge will fold over on the first blow.

The shaft is chrome vanadium, heat treated and tempered, on a 14mm SDS-PLUS shank at 250mm long.
