Hole Saw Arbor (14-30)

A hole saw is simply a toothed cup with a threaded boss in the centre of its base. It has no shank and nothing to hold it. The arbor is the piece that screws into that boss, carries the shank that goes into the drill, and holds the pilot drill that runs down the middle. Buy the cup without the arbor and you have a component rather than a tool.

The pilot drill matters more than its size suggests. It goes into the material first and holds the centre of the saw exactly where you marked it, so the teeth start cutting a true circle instead of skating across the surface. Without it a hole saw is almost impossible to start: the teeth chatter, the saw wanders, and it scars the workpiece before it bites. Anyone who has tried to enlarge an existing hole with a hole saw, where the pilot has nothing to grip, has met the problem.

This arbor is fitted with a pilot drill held by a set screw in the body, so the drill can be slid out and replaced when it blunts or breaks. That is worth having, because the pilot is a small bit doing a great deal of work and it is always the first part to go. A saw with a worn pilot wanders; a fresh pilot restores it.
