Grit is a measure of how fine the abrasive particles are. A low number means coarse particles that cut fast and leave deep scratches. A high number means fine particles that cut slowly and leave a smoother surface. So far, obvious.

What is not obvious, and what costs people hours, is that you cannot skip grades. Each grit's real job is to remove the scratches left by the grit before it. Go straight from a coarse grade to a fine one and the fine abrasive has to erase gouges far deeper than it was designed to touch, which takes an enormous amount of time, wears out the expensive fine disc, and usually ends with the operator giving up and accepting a surface that still shows marks under the paint. Step through the grades in order and each stage is short, because it is only removing the shallow scratches of the previous one.

That is the whole argument for owning both this disc and the 60 grit version rather than choosing between them. Sixty takes the weld down. Eighty removes what sixty left behind and produces a surface fit for paint.

Eighty grit is therefore the blending and refining grade: cleaning up after coarse work, feathering the edge of a repair, preparing steel that will be seen, and light work where a coarser disc would remove more than you want.

Everything else is as the 60 grit disc: fired aluminium oxide leaves on a fibreglass backing, MPA approved, in the conical form that lands flat at the angle a grinder is naturally held.

One limit worth stating. Aluminium oxide clogs quickly on aluminium and other soft metals, and a loaded disc stops cutting and starts generating heat instead. These are specified for steel and wood.
