Curved Flap Disc With Fiberglass Backing (Φ115x22.2mmx60#)

Instead of one solid bonded stone, a flap disc is built from many overlapping leaves of abrasive cloth fixed to a backing plate, arranged so each leaf slightly covers the one behind it. As the outer edges of those leaves wear away, fresh abrasive underneath is exposed, so the disc keeps cutting at a steady rate instead of glazing over and starting to skid. It renews itself as it works.

The practical consequence is that it grinds and blends in one operation. A rigid wheel removes material fast but leaves deep gouges and a hard edge to the cut, so a weld dressed with a stone then needs a second tool to blend it in. A flap disc takes the weld down and leaves a surface you can paint, in one pass, which for a fabricator is a genuine saving of time and of a second consumable.

The CURVED, or conical, shape matters. A flat disc works best held almost parallel to the surface. Held at the natural angle you actually hold a grinder, a curved disc lands its full face on the work, which is exactly the position you want for dressing a weld bead.

The fibreglass backing is a real safety feature and not just a base. It lets the disc be worn down close to the plate without the shattering risk of a depressed centre grinding wheel, and it does not throw hard fragments the way a cracked stone can.

MPA approval, which these carry and the other items on this page do not, is independent German testing of abrasives against a safety standard. On something spinning at over ten thousand revolutions a minute beside your face, that is worth having.

Sixty grit is the general fabrication grade: knocking back welds, deburring, cleaning edges, and preparing steel.
