Since thread confusion causes more wasted purchases here than anything else, here is how to settle it in under a minute. Unplug the grinder. Remove the disc, the clamping nut and the backing flange so the bare spindle is exposed. M14x2 is visibly the chunkier of the two, roughly the diameter of a pencil, and it is what the great majority of 115mm and 125mm machines have. M10x1.5 is noticeably slimmer and turns up on smaller and older grinders. If a brush spins on freely for two or three turns and then binds, it is the wrong thread and forcing it will damage the spindle, which is a far more expensive component than a brush.

With that settled, this is the brush for heavy work: 0.5mm wire in twisted knots, which hammers rather than sweeps, and strips mill scale, weld slag, thick paint and deep rust.

One point about the work rather than the tool, and it is one people rarely think about. If you are cleaning stainless steel, do not use a brush that has been used on ordinary steel, and preferably do not use a carbon steel brush at all. Carbon steel particles left embedded in a stainless surface will rust later, staining the job with brown spots that appear weeks after it was finished and look exactly like the stainless itself has failed. Fabricators who work in both keep separate brushes and mark them, and it is worth doing.
